Measure Twice...
In my dreams I see a slingshot. A simple engine-on-frame construction. It beckons and I approach. “Remove me,” says the engine. “Go on...It’ll be easy…”
It was, but we hadn’t figured on just how close some of the tolerances were. I am now of the opinion that the frame was welded up around the engine and box!
Lowering the replacement engine we manage to engage the main shaft and then push and shake for 35 minutes until the end of the shaft clonks smoothly into the clutch. But there is still a gap between cossy bellhousing and box. I’d overlooked what seems to be a small, cylindrical casting that the clutch cable passes through.
The original engine didn’t have one. Bugger, it’ll have to be ground off. Bugger again. The frame position means I can’t get a file anywhere near it (nope, no power at Trespasser’s House). The engine will need to come out again. We spend another 35 minutes trying to disengage the main shaft and, when finally I approach the casting in anger it falls off. It’s just a push-in plastic collar...
