Team Hector: The Demon Awakes
Trespasser was purchased by Team Hector in late 2003. The then owners, Darryl and Sarah, gave little away regarding the nature of the beast and Linda, the other half of Team Hector, and I were slow to pick up on the few clues that were dropped during the viewing and negotiating. The crucifix above the garage door, the rotating heads...The Demon had been busy with them, too. A mid-race engine explosion for Darryl in Trespasser, and as for the Ramraider dragster, well, let Sarah explain.
“The car was originally Adrenalin Overload and when it was first loaded in the trailer Trev the then owner did not secure the front end. The nose cone was destroyed. When I raced the car I put it through the portacabin (at Shakey) and smashed the nose cone (among other things!). Hence the change of name to Ramraider! Now (rebuilt and renamed: "Chemical Reaction"). We loaded the car in the trailer to take to a show - the £800 spray job having been finished the day before - it had a new nose cone which it clearly did not want as when we got to the show the nose had split AGAIN!!! It has been repaired but I do think it is trying to tell us something!!!...”
Still, our rebuild was to be a simple affair. Remove the existing 2.00 Pinto lump and replace it with something hotter, but still appropriate for the age of the machine. A Cossy lump. That should be a pretty simple swap. This was to be our undoing. The moment that the first nut was turned we were doomed. A seemingly endless sequence of small, but soul-destroying problems began to occur.
